Meet our presenter: MARCIA MATHIAS

Marcia Sprecher Mathias was born in Batavia NY, grew up in Seminole Florida and moved to Charleston, SC, in the mid 1970’s. While working as a registered nurse, she continued another personal passion of hers in visual art, painting in watercolor, acrylics, and oil.

As a self-taught artist, she read numerous books from several universities across the United States her favorite art books being Art and Visual Perception by Rudolf Arnheim, and The Art Spirt by Robert Henri. Not only are they both very technical, but they also discuss at length the psychology of painting and perception. “One advantage of being self taught is that I can apply everything technical that I’ve learned over the years and apply it through my own interpretation and style.”

Marcia presents her work to the public as impressionistic, with a slightly whimsical look. She also enjoys abstract painting to push her creative thinking further. Marcia believes art is so personal, the beauty is not only what the artist sees, but how the viewer interprets the art. Her goal is to capture the viewer, inject a feeling of solitude, depth, and passion in a harmonious movement across the canvas.

Marcia is an exhibiting member of the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery, and a member of American Impressionist Society. She has received numerous awards, and her paintings are in private collections around the world.
